President’s Corner February 2019
2019 is here and we’re in full swing! Our annual business and membership meeting was held 11 January 2019. We received the Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports and held elections. The following officers were re-elected: LCDR Nancy Rey, 1stVP Membership; LTC Jeff Collins, 2ndVP Programs; Col Alex Bettinger, Secretary; CDR Walter Rey, Treasurer; and I was re-elected President. I thank you for your support and confidence.
We had a good discussion on finances during the meeting. One key point in this discussion was how to maintain and possibly increase funding for our programs supporting Veterans over the long run. The best option with the most potential for funds seems to be donations. One ongoing effort, which should make raising funds easier, is establishing a 501c3 Foundation underneath the Chapter. This will allow corporations and individuals to donate to the Foundation and receive a tax deduction for their donation. The Chapter currently is unable to do this as we are organized as a 501c4 organization which means we are only a non-profit organization and do not have to pay income taxes. We have received formal permission from the State of Ohio for the 501c3 foundation. A lawyer is currently reviewing the by-laws for the foundation. We will submit the required forms to the Internal Revenue Service for the 501c3 organization, once the review is finalized. We anticipate approval in late summer or early fall. MOAA National is organized with foundations like the Scholarship Fund underneath the primary organization, so when corporations or individuals donate to the fund, those donations become eligible for a tax deduction. I’ll keep everyone abreast of the status of this foundation and in the meantime, if anyone has other ideas on raising funds and/or donations, please let me know.
You should have seen the 2018 Accomplishments document by now. It’s posted to the website, printed in the January 2019 newsletter (CONNNECT), was sent by email to each member with an email address and provided to each member who does not use email by regular mail. I believe this is an impressive listing of how we’re accomplishing our mission. I believe the foundation will assist us in continuing to accomplish our mission, on the financial side, over the long term on. We also need each of you to continue with your membership; and if you haven’t renewed, please do so and recruit a new member!
We are waiting on the IRS approval, and while we wait, we’re looking at various way(s) to execute fund raising. I will make an appeal right now that if anyone has experience in fund raising or would like to participate in raising funds from businesses and individuals, please let me know
We are beginning to take advantage of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) which opened this past October. We’ve scheduled our February Board meeting there as a trial run. I am also checking with the NVMM on having the quarterly Council of Chapters meetings there. The first Saturday of each month I’ll be attending a meeting at NVMM held by the CEO (LTG Ferriter). He is asking Veterans organizations within the area to attend and provide ideas/feedback on how the NVMM can better serve the Veteran community both locally and nationally. The first meeting is 2 February, so I will be able to provide feedback next month.
- 6 Feb 19is the Board of Directors meeting and will be held at the NVMM (Franklin Room).
- 8 Feb 19is our luncheon at the Berwick. Our speakeris Mr. Kevin Gallagher. Kevin is the Executive Director of Cornerstone of Hopewhich is a non-profit organization providing grief services in the Columbus area. While Kevin will describe his organization’s mission and how they accomplish it, he will also speak on various aspects of being a 501c3 organization and discuss fundraising. These are two aspects which are very timely for us as a Chapter.
