June 2019 President’s Corner
We had a busy and exciting Spring! The Chapter is doing well, and we continue to work on Survey results; specifically, how to implement key Survey recommendations. We are also getting the Chapter Foundation up and running. There is no lack of work to be done, so if you’re bored with what you’re doing now, just step up!
I trust everyone had a superb Memorial Day and were able to take advantage of the many free or reduced prices for meals by local restaurants (an example would be McCormick & Schmick’s complimentary lunch or dinner offer – see attached flyer if interested – click HERE and you’re reading this before Memorial Day! If you attended the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) ceremony on the 27th, you heard two great speakers, LTG (ret) Ferriter (CEO of the NVMM) and
Army Master Sergeant (ret) Jennifer Ballou who is also a Gold Star Spouse. The Ohio Council of Chapters has made the NVMM it’s primary location for Quarterly meetings. Our Chapter has yet to do this, but we’ve had two successful Board meetings there and will continue to consider this option.
Upcoming Events: I am now moving from a traditional President’s Corner text straight into the Upcoming Eventsportion. That is due to having four events this summer which I truly want to highlight and encourage all to attend if possible.
- 2019 Ohio Women Veterans Conference:This is a one-day
Event occurring on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the Ohio Union on the Ohio State University campus. This event is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and the Ohio Women Veterans Advisory Committee. Our Chapter will man a publicity (and recruiting) table at this event and if you miss it, you’ll have to wait until 2021 for the next event.
- 2019 MOAA Ohio Council of Chapters Convention: The State
Convention is another special event which occurs once every two years. The Convention is in Cincinnati, 20-22 September (Friday-Sunday). The Cincinnati Chapter of MOAA is hosting the event. The location is the Blue Ash Quality Hotel just off I-71. The room rate is $89. Lt Gen Atkins, the MOAA President will be the featured speaker. The room rate is fantastic because that weekend the Reds are playing ball and Oktoberfest is occurring – room rate is good from Thursday thru Sunday nights if you wish to take in these other events. You can check out the Cincinnati Chapter’s website for more information.
- 75thD-Day Anniversary: Charlotte Harden of the La
Chatelaine French Bakery & Bistro in Upper Arlington is inviting all United States Veterans to this location beginning at 5 p.m. on June 6, 2019 to commemorate the WWII Veterans, the Alliance between the United States and France, and the Liberation of France. This is the 28thyear for this commemoration. The address is 1550 West Lane Avenue, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. For more information, you may contact Charlotte Harden at 614.519.0058.
- 14 June Luncheon at the Berwick:Three significant actions are
coming together at this luncheon. First, it is Flag Day, secondly, it is the Army’s birthday, and thirdly, we have an excellent speaker in Mr. Chad Simpson. You may have seen Chad as a guest at our previous luncheons as he frequently provides transportation for Chaplain Pendell. Chad is also an Ambassador for the Wesley Communities; however, neither of these facts will be mentioned during his talk at the luncheon. Chad has great interest in and studied military history. On the 14th, he will present a talk on BG Rufus Putnam, a man who had a significant impact on the history of Ohio. This should be an interesting day.
Other Upcoming Event: 5 Jun 19is the Board of Directors meeting in Bldg 11, Section 9, Room 906 at the Defense Supply Center – Columbus (DSCC)
