August 2019 President’s Corner
July was a busy month and I would like to highlight a couple of events. Major(ret) Ray Bower was our speaker at the 12 July luncheon and he did an excellent job talking about U-10s and his job with Special Operations during Vietnam. Ray has been a Chapter member since 2001 and we’re extremely proud to have him as a member. We also participated in a roundtable discussion 19 July at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) with BG Tony Wright, the DCG of the 88thReadiness Division. I really appreciate those who were able to attend. The following day was the Ohio Council of Chapters meeting at the NVMM.
August seems to be another busy month. We have our monthly Board meeting on 7 Aug at DSCC. 9 Aug is our luncheon and this one is special as we have Mr. Robert (Bob) McGaughyspeaking, and his subject is the Doolittle Raiders. The last surviving member of the Raiders, LtCol (ret) Richard Cole died this past April at age 103 and Bob was able to interview him prior to his death. Bob will not only speak about the combat action of the Raiders, but his interaction with the survivors and their families over the years. I hope to see as many people as possible at this luncheon. I’m bringing 3-4 guests myself. The day following the luncheon, 10 Aug, we’re manning a table at the Ohio Women Veterans Conference. This year the conference is being held at the Ohio Union at The Ohio State University.
I noted earlier this year we would look at the Chapter’s financial position at the end of June 2019 and make a recommendation regarding an increase in annual dues. This has been accomplished and the results were discussed at the July Board meeting. It appears we can meet our expenses and honor our budget commitments to fund programs, and still begin 2020 in an adequate financial position without increasing dues. The real positive aspect of the financial position is we are off to a good start with our 501c (3) Foundation and will begin solicitating donations in the Sep-Oct timeframe. The plan is to use donations to fund our programs and dues will be used solely to cover Chapter expenses.
We are currently engaged in our annual fund raising project supporting the Central Ohio Veterans Stand Down. We have $500 to go. Please see the related item in the Central Ohio News section of this CONNECT.
