The President’s Corner has been easy to write over the past six months due to the continuous great accomplishments and actions by the Chapter and individual members. July is no different. We’re working on an article for the MOAA magazine, Military Officer, which will hopefully be published in October. We’ve established an Advisory Committee to help obtain a wide variety of luncheon speakers and possibly plan other special events. CAPT George Williams is the Chairman, so if you have suggestions, please get in touch with him. In addition, we’re maintaining our financial base, welcome new members monthly, and continuing full support of our programs.
LET’S INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS (BOD)! Now that I have your attention, please read on. While we’re doing well now, I believe we need to become better prepared for future years. We currently have an excellent BOD (17 Board Members) who are doing a superb job. The problem is the positions are only one person deep in most cases. This is not a good idea since we have no one gaining experience in either specific positions or the workings of the Board as a whole. There is no one to cover if the prime member must miss a meeting or event and more seriously, if a prime member has an extended absence or becomes a permanent loss to the BOD.
There are multiple solutions; however, the most effective would be to simply increase Board Membership. I like this solution as it provides members who want to contribute more an opportunity to do so. We could have a person(s) gaining experience in specific positions and the conduct of the operations in total. To achieve this solution, we need members to step forward. If you’re interested in a specific area such as Membership, Stand Downs, Personal Affairs, Legislation, etc., we can put you with that BOD member and you can work with him/her. If you want to be a BOD member without a specific position, you can become a “Member at Large.” I did this for one year and it was a superb experience. We need to take advantage of the great experience and abilities of the people we now have in place on the BOD.
I hope you give this consideration and if you can spare the time, please come forward. If you wish to check things out prior to deciding, come visit one of the Board meetings. Board meetings are normally held the first Wednesday of each month at Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) and usually last about one hour. Of course, there is an exception for July due to the holiday on 4 Jul 18. Our BOD in July will be on the 11th. Just let me or anyone on the Board know you’d like to attend.
Upcoming Events: Our regular board meeting will be on 11 Jul 18 at DSCC and our monthly general business meeting and luncheon will be 13 Jul 18 at the Berwick. Our own Colonel Pete Wilkinson is the speaker. We also have the State Council meeting on 28 Jul 18 at DSCC. Colonel Tony Pimentel from MOAA National (Councils & Chapters) will be a special guest at this meeting and we’ll take him to lunch afterwards at the 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant.
