Congratulations to CW4 (ret) David McDaniels as the winner of the $25.00 American Express gift card. It was mentioned in a previous President’s Corner that we would draw for this gift card and eligible members would be those who responded to our survey (with their names). We had 49 responses and 39 with names. Our luncheon speaker, Ms. Vivian Hutson drew Chief McDaniels name. David has been a member for only a few months, so this is an excellent beginning.
We will be working on comments/input from this survey for the rest of the year; however, we’re already beginning to act on a couple of items. I met at the State House with our State Legislative Board member and one State Representative’s Staff assistant. We discussed ways to be more involved in Ohio legislative actions. The 501c3 Foundation is now awaiting IRS approval and once approved, that should end some concerns members have about their dues going to support charities. We will attempt to fund our programs thru donations and allow dues to cover Chapter administrative and operational expenses. The members who believe we should be involved in JROTC (some members do not believe we should) are meeting to identify ways that we can be involved, at no cost and with no distraction to current programs.
The other parts of the survey responses will be harder to implement and will take longer. There is about a 50-50 split between those who like Berwick and want luncheons to continue there and those who will never come to Berwick, so this will take some creative thinking. We will look hard at special events, perhaps combine with fund-raising events, and alternatives to the “business as usual” approach. I ask for your patience as this will take some time.
We went back to DSCC for our Board of Directors (BOD) meeting in March and discussed whether to continue with DSCC or move to NVMM on a regular basis. We identified positives and negatives with both locations. The decision was to try NVMM one more time, so we will hold our May 2019 BOD at the NVMM. We will see if we want to make a permanent relocation, stay with DSCC or perhaps do a combination of both after the May meeting. The May NVMM meeting would be an excellent opportunity, if you’ve never attended a BOD meeting, to do so.
Ms. Vivian T. Hutson who is the CEO and Director of the Central Ohio Health Care System was an excellent speaker at the March luncheon. Ms. Hutson provided interesting insights into the VA Center here in Columbus and provided a look at the future focus of VA.
I am not putting this in upcoming events (yet), but just a reminder that the Columbus Armed Forces Day Luncheon will be held May 17, 2019 at the Villa Milano Banquet & Conference Center. Our tradition is to let that be our luncheon event for May. Any members who don’t like the Berwick or the drive to Berwick, this is a perfect opportunity to attend a luncheon. The luncheon is sponsored by MILVETS and this year they are honoring the Navy. We normally reserve two tables accommodating 20 people. It would be great to have 40-50 people there, so if you’re available just put the date on your calendar. There will be more information on costs (probably about $25.00/person) and reservations in a later newsletter.
April Speaker(s): Ms. Laurie Manley from the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) and Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Steve Jones are our luncheon speakers. Laurie is the Volunteer and Intern Manager and Steve is a Volunteer at the NVMM. They will each provide insights on volunteer opportunities, training available, and NVMM future development.
It is still not too late to renew your membership, if you haven’t already done so. 2019 is going to be an exciting and great year.
Upcoming Events: 3 Apr 19 is the Board of Directors meeting and will be held in Bldg. 11, Rm 906, at DSCC. 12 Apr 19 is our luncheon at the Berwick. Our speakers, as noted above are Laurie Manley and Steve Jones. Make your reservations!
For Board Members: please attend the 12 Apr luncheon – it will be picture day after the luncheon!
